Nintendo 64 emulator for PC
Nostyra plays Nintendo 64 games through Mupen64Plus-Next. The core draws with the GPU (GLideN64) at a fixed 960×720 (4:3), so your graphics driver must support OpenGL 3.3.

Game files
.z64(big-endian),.v64(byte-swapped) and.n64(little-endian), from 4 KiB to 64 MiB.- The first four bytes decide the byte order, not the extension. Every byte order hashes as the
.z64image, so copies match the same No-Intro entry and share one save folder. .bin,.u1,.ndd(64DD) and archives are not listed.
Saves
- One
save.srm(RetroArch layout) holds EEPROM, SRAM, Flash and the Controller Pak in port 1. - Save states work (about 16 MiB each).
Controls
- Gamepad: left stick = N64 stick, right stick = C-buttons, left trigger = Z, A / B on the south / west buttons. The right trigger keeps fast-forward.
- Keyboard: Z = A, A = B, E = Z, Q / W = L / R, I/J/K/L = stick, T/F/G/H = C-buttons.
Known limits
- Run-ahead and rewind are off: the core's save states are not frame-exact.
- Not yet: Rumble Pak, Transfer Pak, 64DD, texture packs, resolution and widescreen options, more than one player, Vulkan (ParaLLEl-RDP).
- Soft patches are applied as-is: most are made for
.z64dumps, so patch a.z64.
Before you start
Nostyra does not include, download or link to Nintendo 64 games or BIOS files. Use games you own, dumped from your own cartridges or discs. See the disclaimer.
Features for Nintendo 64 games
Save states
A save state stores the whole emulated machine at one moment, so you can continue from any point, not only where the game lets you save.
PS4, PS5 and Xbox controllers
Nostyra reads gamepads through SDL3. Gamepads work out of the box, and the Controls editor shows Xbox or PlayStation button labels to match your pad. The DualSense (PS5) has been tested by the maintainer.
CRT and LCD shaders
Shaders change how the picture is drawn, for example to imitate the scanlines of a CRT TV or the pixel grid of a handheld screen.
RetroAchievements
RetroAchievements is a community service that adds achievements to classic games. Nostyra supports it on 14 systems using rcheevos, the same library RetroArch uses.
Resume
When you quit a game, Nostyra saves a resume point. The next time you press Play, it asks whether to continue from there or start fresh.
